Exploring a Tuna Research Lab

Hello everyone!

Yesterday our group went to the Achotines Laboratories to meet scientists who study tunafish and take a tour of the facility.  We started off by watching a video depicting how tunafish are studied at Achotines, which featured footage of the tuna being captured in the nearby Pacific Ocean and particularly jazzy music.  After that we watched the daily feeding of the tuna.  From there we were split in to two different groups to be taken a tour of the facility.  My group got to observe the inside of the laboratory where we got to examine dead, but preserved tunafish throughout different stages of their life.  For me (Casey) this was especially exciting as I got to see many scientific instruments and chemicals such as a jar of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ácido etilendiaminotetraacético).  At the end of the tour we regrouped to have local pastries in the lab’s outdoor patio.  Then we reboarded the buses and traveled to a nearby beach, Playa Venao, which is known for its surfing. We ate lunch by the beach, and afterwards we had time to go swimming. Some of us attempted to “body surf” the waves, and then spent time making sandcastles. Eventually we headed back to Pedasí and went our separate ways.

Hasta luego,

  • Casey and Tommy
